Game Rules
Dealing Cards
Preferans uses a 32-card deck, rotating dealer positions, and a talon that adds excitement to every deal.
- Cards from 7 to Ace in each suit (7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A)
- Card ranking: 7 (lowest) to Ace (highest)
- Three players participate in each game
- Each player receives 10 cards
- 2 cards are placed in talon (face down)
- Dealer position rotates counterclockwise after each hand
- First player after the dealer starts bidding
Bidding Phase
During bidding, players compete to declare the contract, set trumps, or opt for bold modes like Betl and Sans.
- Available game types: Spades, Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs, Betl, Sans
- They are bidding for 2 cards that are in talon
- Player can bid "Pass" leaving bidding to the next player
- Each bid must be higher than the previous one, starting with Spades (First player can equalize the bid)
- The highest bidder receives the talon cards and declares the trump card after returning two cards to the talon
- Players can bid "Game", indicating that they can declare game type without talon cards
- Declarer declares the trump card (he must win at least 6 tricks)
- Declared game type cannot be lower then bid
- Betl is a game where declarer must lose all tricks
- Sans is a game where declarer must win 6 tricks, there is no trump card and left player is first to play
- If all players pass, a new hand is dealt
Escort Phase
The escort phase lets defenders decide whether to join forces, invite help, or escalate the stakes with kontra calls.
- Players can choose to follow (join) or pass (They need to win 2, or 4 tricks combined)
- If a player follows, they become an escort
- Escorts play against the declarer to prevent them from winning tricks
- Player can invite other players to join the game (They need 4 tricks combined)
- Kontra can be called by players that opted in (They need 5 tricks combined)
- Rekontra can be called by the declarer in response (They need 6 tricks combined)
- Each Kontra/Rekontra doubles the game value
- If all players pass, the declarer plays alone
Playing Phase
Once play begins, everyone must follow suit, respect trump priorities, and chase the required number of tricks.
- First player after the dealer leads the first trick
- Players must follow suit if possible
- If unable to follow suit, players must play a trump card
- The highest trump card or the highest card of the led suit wins the trick
- For regular games, declarer must win at least 6 tricks
- For Betl, declarer must lose all tricks
- For Sans, declarer must win 6 tricks
Scoring System
Scoring combines base values, kontrarekontra multipliers, and soup/bula tracking to reward precise execution.
- Base game values: Spades (4), Diamonds (6), Hearts (8), Clubs (10), Betl (12), Sans (14)
- Game variants add +2 to the base value (e.g., Game Spades = 6)
- Kontra doubles the game value, Rekontra doubles it again
- Refa points can be used to double the game value
- Bula points track the main score, while Soup points track additional scoring
- Final score calculation: (Bula × -10) + Left Soup + Right Soup - Left Player's Right Soup - Right Player's Left Soup
